HUNTINGTON, NY –Huntington Hospital marks its 100th anniversary of caring for the community in 2016. The hospital is currently in the midst of building a new emergency department which will be completed at the end of 2016. During work on this new construction, the hospital discovered some of its past – a time capsule from the early 1960s.
This capsule contained several documents from the early 1960s including a hospital news release from 1960, a 1961 financial statement and a 1962 hospital department chief list, among other items. Huntington Hospital’s leadership decided to use the existing time capsule vessel to leave some mementos for future generations and placed new items from 2016 into the vessel. The capsule was placed in one of the main beams of the soon-to-be-completed new emergency department.
“Finding this time capsule during the construction of our future emergency department was a great feeling, especially as we are celebrating our centennial,” said Randy Howard, vice president of operations at Huntington Hospital.
Huntington Hospital’s first day of service to the community is believed to be May 1, 1916. The hospital will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year with a variety of events, including its golf outing and gala.
The new Huntington Hospital emergency department is slated to be opened in January, 2017.
