PLAINVIEW, NY –U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey recently announced that he has become vegan.
Prior to being vegan, Sen. Booker was a vegetarian, which might make it easier for him to stick to the vegan diet.
“We all know that diets are tough and sustaining them is even tougher; that is why people who transition to a Vegan diet from a Vegetarian diet have the most success,” says Eric Sieden, director of food and nutritional services at Plainview and Syosset hospitals. “Most vegetarians consider themselves to be Ovo-Lacto vegetarian, in which they will consume dairy, eggs and other animal byproducts. We have seen that those who become vegan after being vegetarian find it easier since meat is already excluded. I’ve heard that the biggest challenge is how difficult it is to give up dairy, foods that contain cheese and other baked goods that contain eggs and other animal byproducts. However, the fact that there are so many alternatives to cheese, such as soy cheese along with the popularity and growth of vegan bakeries and baked products makes it easier to get that junk food fix and thus makes that lifestyle change a little easier to swallow.”
He says if you would like to become a vegan, make this lifestyle change gradually, giving it a better chance to take hold.
