Hempstead, NY – The Village of Hempstead recently marked the first year anniversary of its partnership with North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) to provide emergency medical services for the Village.
Hempstead receives approximately 6,000 emergency calls every year. For years, the Village was dependent on the Nassau County Ambulance Bureau for the majority of its 911 emergency calls. Under the old system, when Nassau County ambulance services were needed, a Hempstead Village police officer had to be assigned to drive the ambulance to the hospital while the accompanying Nassau County EMT cared for the patient. The process put a great deal of strain on the Village’s police department and ended up costing the Village unbudgeted money for police overtime payments.
“The EMT partnership with North Shore LIJ has allowed the Village to provide quality life-saving emergency medical services without taking our police officers off our streets,” explained Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr. “It has greatly improved response times and benefited taxpayers by reducing police overtime expenses.”
“Providing Hempstead Village residents with cost-effective, optimum quality emergency healthcare is our top priority,” said Alan Schwalberg, vice president of emergency medical services for North Shore-LIJ. “We look forward to continuing the success of this partnership for many years to come.”
In June 2012, the Hempstead Village Board of Trustees signed an agreement with North Shore-LIJ CEMS to deliver 24-hour, seven-day-a-week ambulance and emergency medical coverage to the village at no cost to Hempstead’s local government. Since the partnership began in June, there have been 5,827 calls with 5,384 people being transported to area hospitals. The average response time was improved to less than five minutes.
“We estimate that we have saved between one and one-half hours of police time for each and every call, resulting in a total of more than 7,000 police-hours in total,” said Mayor Hall. “We have also received more than 100 letters and emails from local residents applauding us on the emergency services they received.”
