Keber honoured for her work in Diabetes Education and Hospice Care
Barbara Keber MD

GLEN COVE, NY – Barbara Keber, MD, associate director of the Family Medicine Residency program at Glen Cove Hospital, was recently named Physician of the Year by the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators (MNYADE) at the organization’s annual meeting at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho.  She also received the Community Physician Award from the Woodbury-based Hospice Care Network at its annual board meeting in April.

Dr. Keber was recognized by MNYADE, a chapter of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, for her expertise, professionalism and creativity in helping individuals with diabetes learn how to effectively manage their disease.  Hospice Care Network’s award is given to physicians who embody qualities important in caring for patients and their families at the end of life.  Dr. Keber was specifically recognized for her compassion and caring; commitment to patients’ care throughout their illness, even when they are part of the hospice program; skill in helping their patients to be as comfortable as possible; and a partner and member working closely with staff at Hospice Care Network.

Dr. Keber has worked in family medicine and diabetes care management for most of her medical career.  Over the last 30 years, she has held a variety of clinical positions at Glen Cove Hospital. Dr. Keber is a team leader and member of the multidisciplinary Task Force for Diabetes Center Accreditation at Glen Cove Hospital. Thanks to the task force’s efforts, in 2009, Glen Cove Hospital was the first hospital in New York State to earn advance inpatient diabetes management by The Joint Commission, a national healthcare accreditation organization. The Joint Commission recertified the hospital in 2011 for this top clinical recognition.

In her role at Glen Cove, Dr. Keber spearheaded a program that screened all admitted patients at risk, for diabetes and tracked them throughout their hospital stay to ensure that blood sugar levels are monitored properly and their condition is treated appropriately.  This initiative promotes a proactive approach to treating diabetes and preventing complications from the disease.

Dr. Keber, who also serves on the North Shore-LIJ Health System Diabetes Task Force, was instrumental in Glen Cove Hospital’s three primary care offices receiving National Committee for Quality Assurance recognition, one of the highest honors in diabetes care.

Dr. Keber is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.  In 2010 she received North Shore-LIJ’s Glen Cove Family Medicine Program Resident Teacher Award.  Dr. Keber earned a BS in Chemistry from the College of New Rochelle and her medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center.  She completed her residency in Family Medicine at Glen Cove Hospital and also served as chief resident.
