MANHATTAN, NY-- Eighty-year-old New York City resident Joel Ross completed his radiation treatments today, one of the first patients to be treated at Lenox Hill Hospital’s newly expanded radiation medicine program. Part of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, the expanded radiation medicine program – featuring Manhattan’s only TomoTherapy unit -- at Lenox Hill Hospital is another example of the ongoing expansion of one of the largest cancer programs in the New York metropolitan area.  The $15 million dollar project is one of many investments totaling about $175 million that North Shore-LIJ is making to open new treatment centers and expand existing facilities throughout the region

“The Radiation Medicine Department at Lenox Hill is uniquely able to provide total care for cancer patients – a true need in the community this hospital serves,” said Louis Potters, MD, co-executive director of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, and the health system's chair of radiation medicine.

The centerpiece of the radiation treatment center is the TomoTherapy unit, which combines 3D-imaging technology with rotational delivery of radiation. The result is highly focused radiation therapy with unprecedented accuracy. TomoTherapy provides an individualized and comprehensive treatment solution for a variety of cancers, including complex tumors and tumors that are close to critical organs.

In addition to the TomoTherapy unit and linear accelerator, Lenox Hill Hospital’s radiation medicine program expands radiation oncology services to include intra-operative radiation treatments for breast cancer, which enables patients to be treated at the time of surgery and decreases the need for post-operative treatment.

“Expanding radiation oncology services will evolve Lenox Hill Hospital’s cancer program into a full-fledged, multidisciplinary oncology center with a team of experts committed to providing the most comprehensive and effective therapies available to our patients,” said Peter Costantino, MD, executive director and senior vice president of the New York Head & Neck Institute and the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery service line.
