Dowling: Private Equity Coming

Dowling: Private Equity Coming

Crain’s Health Pulse

North Shore-LIJ’s Michael Dowling believes that it’s only a matter of time until private equity makes its way into New York health care—including the health care system he helms.

“We’re in discussions at the moment, trying to figure whether or not there are ways to do this legally,” he told Crain’s in a recent interview.

He sees an inconsistency in how the state defines “for-profit medicine,” arguing it already has arrived in the state.

“Insurance companies are buying physicians’ practices. UnitedHealth Group is buying six practices,” he said. “Do you think New York is an island and nobody else can come in? Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey all allow these. Eventually we’ll have them, too.”
