NEW YORK, NY – Derek Chong, MD, has been appointed as vice chair, department of neurology and director of the epilepsy program at Lenox Hill Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, the health system announced today.
For the past three and a half years, Dr. Chong served as an attending neurologist at NYU Langone Medical Center and as assistant professor of neurology at New York University in Manhattan. He also served as director of NYU’s outpatient electroencephalogram (EEG) laboratory and director of the hospital’s consult epilepsy service. At Columbia University Medical Center’s Epilepsy and Sleep Center, Dr. Chong served as director of clinical trials, outpatient seizure clinic and critical care EEG monitoring.
After receiving his medical degree from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, Dr. Chong completed his residency in neurology at the University of Western Ontario, where he served as chief resident for one year. Both institutions are two of Canada’s largest neurology-neurosurgery combined programs, similar to the model of the integrated neuroscience program at Lenox Hill Hospital.
Post-residency, Dr. Chong completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at New York Presbyterian Hospital and a second fellowship in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at Columbia University Medical Center in Manhattan.
Dr. Chong has won numerous awards including the Epilepsy Foundation of America’s Post-doctoral Research Training Fellowship for Clinicians and twice has won the Early Career Physician-Scientist award from the American Epilepsy Society & the Milken Family Foundation to fund his research endeavors.
Dr. Chong, board certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and sleep medicine, is recognized for his novel research in epilepsy and has served as principal investigator and co-investigator of numerous studies including research regarding the gas exchange and autonomic function during seizures, mechanisms of drug-resistance in epilepsy, the responsive neurostimulator (RNS) System (NeuroPace) study and has collaborated on the maternal outcomes and neurodevelopmental effects of antiepileptic drugs (MONEAD) study, as well as the Human Epilepsy Project.
Dr. Chong is a member of numerous organizations including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has served on the editorial boards of prestigious publications including Epilepsia, Epileptic Disorders, Lancet Neurology, Frontiers in Epilepsy, and the Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology.
