Derek Brinster, MD, Named Director of Aortic Surgery for North Shore–LIJ Health System, Lenox Hill Hospital

Derek Brinster, MD, has been named Director of Aortic Surgery at the North Shore-LIJ Health System and Lenox Hill Hospital.

Dr. Brinster comes to Lenox Hill Hospital from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, VA, where he was Professor of Surgery serving as the Director of Aortic Surgery and surgical director of the hospital's Structural Heart Valve Program.  Under his direction the program rapidly expanded and became a regional and national referral site for complex aortic disease pathology.

In his new role, Dr. Brinster will develop a Center for Aortic Disease for the entire North Shore-LIJ Health System and initiate the Acute Aortic Service based at Lenox Hill Hospital. The mission is to deliver advanced, compassionate care of aortic disease that promotes improved healthcare outcomes.

As the director of Lenox Hill Hospital’s Aortic Center, Dr. Brinster will partner with vascular surgeon Alfio Carroccio, MD, and the Division of Vascular Surgery to lead a service that offers integrated care of aortic disease - available at only a few hospitals in the nation. The new service involves collaboration among cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, structural cardiologists and internal medicine physicians.

He has published extensively on multiple topics in cardiac surgery and is a member of multiple surgical and professional societies.

Dr. Brinster completed his undergraduate, medical school, and general surgery training with honors at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
