The North Shore-LIJ Health System — mindful that neonatal and pediatric patients face medication challenges unique from adults — will open a dedicated Pediatric Pharmacy Department at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.
The 6,200-square-foot department will open in the summer of 2016 and is part of a $13.6 million project that will provide pediatric patients with the safest and most effective medication, in the quickest manner possible.
Dr. Enrico Ligniti, director of North Shore-LIJ’s Pediatric Pharmacy Service Line, said the new facility will eliminate workflow constraints inherent with the current design and will end the dependency on the health system’s adult inpatient pharmacy resources.
“The medication needs of our neonatal and pediatric patients are very different from our adult patients,” Dr. Ligniti said. “To meet these needs, clinical and operations coordinators, along with pediatric-trained pharmacists, will be available around the clock every day of the year, assuring that all medications prescribed to children are appropriate, effective, properly dosed and monitored.”
Numerous considerations were accounted for in the design of a state-of-the-art department, including visits to leading children’s institutions to incorporate best practices and processes into the final floor plan design, Dr. Ligniti said. The overall design incorporates technology and workflow to achieve optimal accuracy and efficiency to meet patient safety, corporate strategy and regulatory compliance expectations.
