SYOSSET, NY – A recent study pointing to inactivity being a bigger contributor toward weight gain than eating too much is a reminder that obesity is a complex disease with many potential causes, a New York registered dietitian says.
“I think it’s a very interesting study and obesity is such a very complex disease with so many factors at play,” says Christine Santori, RD, program manager at the Center for Weight Management at Syosset Hospital. “And I don’t know if at the end of the day we’re going to be able to say that one was more detrimental than another. We absolutely move too little and I think we do eat too much. We’re overstressed, we’re chronically sleep deprived. We rely on a high-processed diet and there’s little time for any leisure activity, which this study focused on. So I think we need to take a global approach at combating this epidemic, but I’m all for getting people moving.”
Genetics, caloric intake, activity and other factors all have bearing on weight gain, Ms. Santori says.
Thirty minutes of exercise can make a big difference in someone’s day and potential weight gain, Ms. Santori says. She advises people who may have hectic schedules and feel overwhelmed by the thought of a lot of exercise to start with 10 minute increments and then gradually build up the amount of time they work out.
