LAKE SUCCESS, NY – The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that it brought together representatives from several college career centers, student veteran organizations and the New York State Department of Labor to help those who aid veterans in transitioning from military to civilian careers.
Attendees at the Barracks to Business seminar learned about the various branches of military service, how to translate the skills and qualities veterans possess into civilian resumes and the health system’s application process.
As part of North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to hiring veterans, the Center for Workforce Readiness created a unique guide that details military skills and matches them to corporate skills. The guide entitled “From Barracks to Business: Translating Military Skills to Career Success,” was presented to the Veteran College Network members, a group that North Shore-LIJ formed.
“This guide is a valuable resource for veterans and gives career counselors greater insight and information to use in their conversations with veterans,” said Bernadette Fackovec, veteran program specialist in North Shore-LIJ’s Center for Workforce Readiness. “It can also help veterans themselves see how their military duties translate in the civilian workforce.”
“I want one of these booklets for every member of my staff,” said Marianna Savoca, director of Stony Brook University’s career center. “Having not served in the military, it’s helpful to get an overview of the kinds of positions people hold so I can better help my clients.”
The North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Center for Workforce Readiness created the Veteran College Network in February. The network is the first of its kind on Long Island, incorporating 19 colleges in New York City and Long Island. Earlier this year, North Shore-LIJ representatives participated in an informational session at Adelphi University; a New York University webinar; and a St. Joseph’s College resume writing workshop. There will be an event at St. John’s University on Nov. 19.
North Shore-LIJ’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy also recently started a business employee resource group in which health system staff who are members of the military, veterans, family members or just people interested in military and veterans’ affairs can have a sense of community and learn from each other’s insights. The group, called VALOR (Veterans and Allies: Liaisons of Reintegration), also has a mentoring component pairing newly hired veterans with another member of the health system to help the transition into the civilian workforce.
