Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program Approved for Long Island

Pediatric patients in Long island who need a kidney transplant will no longer have to be referred to NYC hospitals for surgery, thanks to the state’s approval of a $2 million pediatric kidney transplant facility at Northwell Health's Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. Expected to open by the end of 2016, the program includes an outpatient center to care for patients pre- and post-transplant at Cohen’s Division of Pediatric Nephrology, one of the largest such programs in the state. The pediatric renal clinicians currently see some 1,100 children with kidney disease, including about 50 children with end-stage kidney disease and 13 dialysis patients. Last year, eight children were sent to Manhattan hospitals for transplants and three have been referred to the city so far this year, a spokeswoman for Northwell said. The program, which will be integrated into the Northwell Health Transplant Service, will be led by Dr. Ernesto Momenti, who is also surgical director of Northwell Health’s adult kidney transplant center at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, and Dr. Pamela Singer, who will serve as medical director.
