MANHASSET, NY -- A system-wide approach to reducing healthcare-acquired pressure ulcers earned the North Shore-LIJ Health System the 2014 Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety from the Health Care Association of New York State (HANYS), the health system announced today.
Representatives from North Shore-LIJ formed a pressure ulcer task force that created a consistent approach to skin care across the health system, which effectively reduced hospital-acquired pressure ulcers by 47 percent from 2011 through 2013, the years on which the award was based. That number has since risen to 50 percent.
In recognition of its efforts, North Shore-LIJ earned top honors among 67 nominees at HANYS’ 46th Annual Membership Conference on June 25 in Bolton Landing, NY.
North Shore-LIJ’s pressure sore prevention efforts, said HANYS President Dennis Whalen, represent “tremendous advances in redesigning the way care is delivered.”
“This award is a testament to the dedication of our staff to the continual improvement of patient safety,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “From top to bottom, North Shore-LIJ is committed to providing patient-centric care through teamwork and a culture of patient safety. That hard work is reflected by this award.”
The task force developed a uniform skin care protocol and established standards that are tracked throughout the organization. The task force also provides guidance to the local skin care teams that have been established in each facility to ensure that patients receive evidence-based care. Patients’ families were also encouraged to take an active role in their loved ones’ care.
Maureen White, senior vice president and chief nurse executive, said she was proud of the task force’s accomplishments and the award. “There were a large number of submissions for this award and the competition was intense,” she said. “This is an indication of how hard the staff works each day to continually raise our standards and give patients the highest level of care.”
