UNIONDALE, NY – More than 600 women gathered Wednesday at the Long Island Marriott to hear Arianna Huffington call for a sleep revolution. Ms. Huffington, co-founder, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post media group, author of 15 books and internationally recognized as one of the world’s most influential people,  discussed her findings about sleep during a woman’s health conference sponsored by Northwell Health’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health.

The all-day conference featured a variety of interactive workshops, with topics ranging from women’s heart disease to yoga and plastic surgery. It was no surprise to Ms. Huffington that sleep, which she describes as the “third pillar of health” (along with nutrition and exercise), has become such a huge topic of conversation.

Noting that we have become a culture addicted to electronic devices, Ms. Huffington said that too many of us -- men and women -- suffer from modern civilization’s most common disease -- burnout. “In terms of technology, we take better care of our smart phones than we do of ourselves,” she said.

Suggestions for better sleep, found in her latest book, entitled “The Sleep Revolution—Transforming Your Life, One Night At A Time,” include finding a proper sleep ritual that helps the relaxation process. “Whether it’s a book, warm bath, candles, meditation—anything that helps you slow down your brain activity is important. We need to let our brains know that the day is done, and that the time has come to rest and re-charge,” she said.

Ms. Huffington's remarks were well received by an audience of women who were spending this day learning new techniques to help them feel empowered and healthy. “Life is a dance between making it happen and letting it happen,” she said. “We all must learn techniques that will allow us to face the next day fully re-charged and joyful.”

The women's health conference was the seventh such event held by Northwell Health (formerly known as North Shore-LIJ Health System) since 2003. Past keynote speakers have included NBC Today Show co-host Hoda Kotb, former medical reporter Dr. Nancy Snyderman, and feminist, journalist and activist Gloria Steinem.
