Northwell Health has acquired a majority stake in the Melville Surgery Center, a freestanding, multi-disciplinary, outpatient practice at 1895 Walt Whitman Rd. in Melville.
The nonprofit healthcare system will be part of a joint venture that includes the Ambulatory Surgical Centers of America and 15 physician co-owners.
The center’s 60 surgeons specialize in general, gynecologic, ophthalmologic, orthopedic, plastic, podiatric, spine, urologic, chiropractic, pain management, as well as ear, nose and throat surgeries.
They care for nearly 7000 patients annually in the 10,700-square-foot surgical center that includes four operating rooms, eight pre-operative stations, 13 post-operative stations and a procedure room.
Dr. David Battinelli, senior vice president and chief medical officer, called the deal “another clear example of how we’re partnering with physicians to strengthen patient-centered care in communities we serve throughout the New York metropolitan area.”
Dr. Jay Youngerman, president of the Melville Surgery Center, said the partnership “will go a long way toward ensuring the best care possible for our patients and our community at large.”
This is the seventh joint venture Northwell Health has signed with operators of ambulatory surgery centers.
Northwell already has joint ventures with SurgiCare of Manhattan, Endoscopy Center of Long Island in Garden City, Garden City SurgiCenter, South Shore Surgery Center in Bay Shore, Suffolk Surgery Center in Shirley and Digestive Health Center of Huntington.
The last two centers are awaiting approvals of certificates of need from the New York State Department of Health.
Northwell Health plans to open up to 20 additional ambulatory surgical centers over the next several years.
In addition to operating 21 hospitals, Northwell operates nearly 450 outpatient practices, serving more than 1.8 million patients annually in and beyond the New York metropolitan area.
