Eight New York Hospitals Designated to Treat Ebola Patients
October 16, 2014

By Joseph De Avila
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that eight hospitals in New York state will provide specialized care should any Ebola cases be identified in the state.

The hospitals include Mount Sinai Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Center, Montefiore Medical Center, North Shore-LIJ Health System, SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse, University of Rochester Medical Center and Stony Brook University Hospital.

Speaking at a news conference in New York City, Mr. Cuomo said the more than 200 hospitals in the state will be prepared to identify a case of Ebola if a patient comes to their facility.

“But we are going to have eight identified hospitals that have intensive training and protocols and they have already been identified as the hospitals that we would use if we needed them,” Mr. Cuomo said. “We are preparing should the situation presents itself, which we do not have any reason to believe is going to happen.”

Mr. Cuomo said police, airport workers, hospital workers and Metropolitan Transportation Authority employees are also being trained to identify Ebola symptoms.

MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast said the transit agency has established protocols for disposing infectious waste found on subways and buses. Mr. Prendergast said the MTA was equipped with aggressive cleaning agents that could clean train cars and train platforms. Subway workers also have protective gear to complete such cleanings, he said.

“Ebola is a frightening disease no doubt,” Mr. Cuomo said. He added, “We are prepared, and there is no reason for undue anxiety. There is no reason for panic.”
