Following the trauma of a false positive mammogram, Cathy Fogarty sought out a more precise technology for her annual breast cancer screening. The Lenox Hill Hospital nurse manager switched to an imaging clinic that offers 3-D mammograms, a new imaging option that diminishes the rate of false positives by about 40 percent, according to Dr. Kavita Patel, medical director of Northwell Health Imaging at Lenox Health Greenwich Village. The 3-D mammogram gives a more complete picture of what’s happening inside of the breast, Dr. Patel said. Doctors can now diagnose breast cancer patients with much more accuracy and confidence.
