As executive director, William O’Connell, RN, oversees the overall delivery of cardiology care for Northwell Health with responsibility for patient experience, quality, financial performance and all strategic and operational activities and functions.
He assumed this role in August 2018 after serving as vice president of cardiovascular services for six years, where he provided clinical oversight across the health system and managed the daily operations at Northwell’s tertiary and community hospitals, as well as ambulatory facilities. He worked with senior administrators and physicians to develop strategic business plans and new programs, such as Long Island’s only heart transplant program and development of the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH).
Mr. O’Connell joined Northwell in 1998 as a cardiac nurse at NSUH and after years of clinical service he progressed into various management and administrative positions within the service line, including AVP of Cardiovascular Services. He is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau (nursing) and Beta Gama Sigma (business) international honor societies.
Mr. O’Connell holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Hofstra University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Nursing from Molloy College and he later received an MBA with distinction from Hofstra University. In November 2010, he completed the Cornell-HANYS Academy for Healthcare Leadership Advancement program.
