Research suggests that when healthcare recipients are cared for by medical professionals whose cultural backgrounds reflect their own, the resulting interactions lead to enhanced communication, enhanced patient experience and improved health outcomes. The Northwell Health is committed to attracting, developing and retaining a diverse and skilled workforce.

As a leader in healthcare, serving multicultural communities, we have a responsibility to cultivate and foster diversity within our health network so that we may better serve our diverse populations. Global and inclusive recruitment and staff development efforts will ensure that staff and employees at all levels represent the communities we serve. An inclusive workforce will enhance our delivery of culturally and linguistically appropriate patient care and services and will lead to increased employee engagement.

Business Employee Resource Groups

The Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) program at Northwell Health was established to enhance engagement, innovation, talent development, and promote an inclusive culture ensuring the delivery of culturally sensitive quality patient care. Business Employee Resource Groups are a national best practice aligned with key business goals and objectives of the organization.

All BERGs are required to submit a business plan designed to support the patient-and family-centered care model of our health network.

BERG objectives leading to high quality patient care and community wellness include:

  • Employee engagement
  • Enhancing talent recruitment, retention and development
  • Serving as ambassadors to internal/external communities

All employees are encouraged to voluntarily join a BERG based on their commonalities to bring their whole self to work, expand our market reach and provide an opportunity for talent development.

If you are an employee at Northwell Health and would like to join a BERG, please submit an online membership application through Employee Self-Service (ESS) or email [email protected] to learn more!

VALOR

The mission of VALOR (Veterans and Allies: Liaisons of Reintegration) is to engage and positively impact military personnel, veterans and their family members through community reintegration counseling, employment assistance and health and wellness care.

VALOR members have a vested interest in military and veteran’s affairs and aim to set a new national standard of care for the U.S. military, veterans and their families – and will work collaboratively to better meet the needs of those who have served our country.

The men and women that serve our country in the armed forces have the skillset and mindset to make organizations like ours stronger. See how we help veterans prepare for their next mission in life through resume and interview prep services. Read more about our Barracks to Business workshops.

BRIDGES

BRIDGES brings together employees who are passionate about embracing relationships with our diverse communities through a shared understanding of spiritual, cultural and ethical values in the context of healthcare delivery. Their mission is to strengthen community partnerships, building trust and loyalty, so that the health network can provide the best patient care.

This group is open to all employees who have an interest in helping to build trust, understanding, loyalty and respect for the many cultures that comprise our diverse patient population and equally diverse workforce. BRIDGES has developed business plans that demonstrate the health system’s commitment to sustaining this mission.

EXPRESSIONS

EXPRESSIONS, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) BERG, consists of Northwell Health employees who identify as LGBT, are allies of the LGBT community, are passionate about, or are interested in promoting health equity and awareness of the LGBT community. EXPRESSIONS serves as a resource to enhance workforce engagement and promote LGBT awareness through education and development activities that foster a safe and inclusive environment across the Northwell Health. This BERG works to sustain national recognition for Northwell Health as a LGBT leader, enabling our patients and their families, our employees, and community partners to feel valued and treated with dignity and respect.

Dignity & respect

In 2011, Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy partnered with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) to launch a system-wide Dignity & Respect campaign. Each network hospital was required to provide three quality metrics, which included the number of Dignity & Respect pledges taken throughout the workforce.

In 2014, Northwell Health re-established the Dignity & Respect Campaign, encouraging all employees to make an “Action Pledge” to demonstrate their commitment and dedication to health equity.  The support of Northwell Health senior leadership and the executive directors throughout our health network has been essential to the success and integration of Dignity & Respect into the fabric of our organization.

All employees of the health network are encouraged to:

  • Join a Business Employee Resource Group (BERG)
  • Participate in cultural competence enrichment courses at The Center for Learning and Innovation
  • Complete e-learning programs through iLearn (Learning Management System)
  • Join their site Diversity Inclusion and Health Literacy Council
  • Participate in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Week of Service” Program
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Program

Each year, the Diversity, Inclusion and Health Literacy team organizes the health network’s Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Program to honor Dr. King’s life and work, and recognize the values of service, cultural diversity and inclusion that exist throughout our hospitals.  Take a look at our highlights from previous years.
